Ed is a painter (in the artistic sense, as in: he paints paintings) and a good friend of Nick Starkey. He has been unemployed for some time and detests the fact that he needs money, believing that he shouldn't need any. Upon his return to the police force, Nick turns Ed into his (paid) assistant.
