Many things have and will be said about this movie. Regardless of the easy critics: it's boring, there's no action, it's self-indulging, etc.., I would only add this. There will always be 2 kinds of people (whether they are film-goers, tourists, readers..): the ones who like to "recognize" things (the same stories being told, who is the hero, who is the villain? the same places to go to, the same food...) and the ones who like to discover new things. As to the film, why don't you try it? How many films have you seen that take your hand and take you to a place you've never been before? On the contrary how often do you understand everything from the very first minutes of a movie? who is going to marry who, who is the bad guy, who's going to betray, will there be a happy end? Aren't you ever fed up with this? Try and see The Tree Of Life. It's about growing up in a family. It's about seeing the world through children's eyes. It's a very American story, and what it's like to be torn between religion, ideals and the lust for success and power and money. It's about betrayal by the people you trust. It's about love.

What is this inaugural light? A beginning (birth), an end (near death experience)? What is this language? Inhuman, prehuman?
The first 20 minutes of the movie are mute, repetitive, mesmerizing.
It is a drifting, a hunt, a roaming, a ballet.
With a minimum pitch (aliens tracking down humans). J. Glazer casts a sharp look on our world which is beautiful, swarming but also meaningless and loud.
We understand this is a world of predation only, however gorgeous the predator might be (Scarlet Johansson perfect).
And the predator is also a prey, especially if she is a woman.
There is no such thing as a safe place.
Fire overcomes ice and a fantastic mutation occurs. The skin that we thought soft reveals a black heart. A screams is uttered in the dark loneliness of the world.
At night, the hunters come back in the howling of the mist. Skinless, the prey bleeds on the burning of the sun.
The best movie of 2013. -
Fed up with the current trendy habit of series and numbers (Star Wars 5,6,7..32.../Spiderman, Ironman, Batman, Superman (did I forget one?)2,3,4 etc..) I expected nothing special from Mad Max 4. Just another sequel, before (why not?) a prequel.
I was wrong. Mad Max is everything a blockbuster isn't: inventive, entertaining, visually rewarding, poetic and unexpected.
It starts full speed and keeps accelerating. The plot is simple but not simplistic, the actors well cast and perfect. It is a road movie, a western, a kind of «Stagecoach goes to Hell!». The soundtrack is absolutely deafening and exciting. The different settings are worth a sight. The battle scenes look like fantastic ballets.
To cut a long story short: I had never seen this before! George Miller has totally renewed his own creation.
Moreover, as Hitchcock used to say:«The worse the bad guy, the better the movie.» ? But seriously, who's really afraid of Colossus or the Joker? except 6-year-olds? In Fury Road the villains are really scary. This kind of sadistic, insane fanatics who thrive on dying while killing people ring a bell which recently tolled too often.
In the end, the lonesome cowboy rides away in the sunset. Hit the road once more, Max! -
In 1968 the huge success of Easy Rider turns road movies into a popular genre.
In 1971 Richard Sarafian shoots « Vanishing Point », his masterpiece . Kowalski goes to Denver to take delivery of a car. He bets he can reach San Francisco, 2000 kms away, in 15 hours. To succeed, he has to exceed all the limits. The pitch is thin but the movie is inventive and full of a desperate energy.
This movie is typical of the new Hollywood and depicts the desillusion of the USA in the seventies, the dark side of the American Dream, through a series of meeting with borderline or ordinary people.
Kowalski is a modern cowboy and his Dodge Challenger is going to become mythical. It will inspire Tarantino for Death Proof, and George Miller for some scenes in Mad Max 1.
A great movie ! -
Keaton is a genius!
In this movie like in many others Keaton is a fantastic tumbler. Let's not forget he was on stage with his parents since he was 3 !
Here, two stories mix : fiction and reality. He is a projectionist in love. After the theft of a watch he is going to investigate both in life and dreams, as well as in the movies he shows. It is brilliant, funny, inventive (W. Allen will remember it in the Purple Rose of Cairo). The chase at the end of the movie is a grand funny and poetic moment of pure creation.
In his movies, Chaplin is a destitute, rejected by society. He tries and succeeds in making us laugh and cry. Keaton never tries to make us cry. He isn't a social character. He is somewhere else, forever. The world resists him by all means : tempests, storms, rain but also objects. His untold dream is to be free of gravity.Keaton is a genius !
