Before Sunset (2004)

A perfect sequel to a perfect movie — Written by Michele on 17.07.2010

***Spoilers about this movie and it's precursor(Before Sunrise), some bad language***

It's hard talk about Before Sunset and not mention Before Sunrise.

The good thing about Before Sunrise is that they're young, full of life, hopes and expectations. They're in their mid-twenties, living life to the fullest, enjoying a one-time adventure.

But what's so beautiful about Before Sunset is that we get to see what they became, what happened to their lives and their hopes, dreams and expectations. And it ain't a happy ending. They are not happy about themselves, it's almost as if that one-time experience changed their persona so much that they can't ever return to their old self.

Jesse, to whom I relate the most in both movies, was brokenhearted on the first movie and in a certain way, never got over that feeling. Only switched the girl who broke his heart. His life was never the same, he was never the same. He ended up settling with a comfortable life that was not what he wanted, lost all hopes and dreams when Celine never showed up.

Celine, on the other hand, lived with the guilt of never showing up, and for that never was able to really love anyone else. She shared all of herself that night and never was she able to become intimate with anyone else. She became a broken person.

In Before Sunrise, they were two young adults starting their own paths, still in one piece. But nine years later, in Before Sunset, it was a completely different scenario. They were both broken because of that night. And only them could fix themselves.

It's a movie with beautiful lines, amazing characters, real ones, that are not perfect, never were and as the years passed by, only became more and more fucked up. And with their lack of being perfect, it's when they truly become perfect.

The direction and the acting was incredible. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy just fit for the part in 1995 and even were more right in 2004.

As a fan, I still hope for a third sequel, with a happy ending, even though the good about these characters is that they show that in life, not always we get a happy ending.
