Re-Animator (1985)

Surprisingly good! — Written by deleted user on 18.02.2010

Daniel Cain, a medical student at Miskatonic University and his girlfriend meet the acquaintance of a certain Herbert West (played by Jeffrey Combs), moving in with Daniel who soon becomes entangled in bizarre experiments. The genius West has developed a potion that brings the dead back to life, with catastrophic consequences.

Re-Animator, loosely based on one of H.P. Lovecraft's best-known short stories "Herbert West: Re-Animator" is a true gem of the gore-genre. It has all the qualities of an 80's splatter-flick, yet sets itself apart with an innovative story-line and a highly creepy performance by Jeffrey Combs. The SFX do the job but it won't go unnoticed that it is a low-budget production.
Anyway, considering the mediocre films this genre usually has to offer, Re-Animator will be appreciated by fans of gore and splatter as stroke of genius by its creator Stuart Gordon.

If you like this sort of movie, you won't be disappointed!

For those who would like to get a glimpse of Lovecraft's brilliance, here is the entire original short-story:
