The Invention of Lying (2009)

ricky gervais is god — Written by rabbisanta on 18.01.2010

Finally - a reason to be happy. Ricky Gervais delivers a funny, touching, truthful comedy. It is not a broad American comedy, but will definitely be enjoyed by fans of The Office and Extras and may even sway some new fans. The low-key humor is upheld surprisingly well throughout the film, and though there is a Serious Message, it is well thought-out and not tacked on at the end. Gervais' character learns that lying can get you some wonderful things: Christopher Guest waves at you and Jennifer Garner will (consider) dating you. Instead of the movie working inextricably toward a moral conclusion, it sticks with the characters, which is a relief. The Invention of Lying is a comedy with ideas; fortunately it remains, throughout, a comedy first.
