Last Night (1998)

Left me singing Guantanamera for days afterwards — Written by pishposh on 04.11.2009

Its the last night on earth. For everyone.
We all know it's happening. At the stroke of "midnight" everyone on earth will die instantly, together.

We follow the movie's protagonist, played by the writer and director Don Mckellar, on his bizarre last night on earth, during which he eats a fake Christmas dinner with his family, and meets a strange woman. The woman is played by Sandra Oh, for whom the part was expressly written (McKellar has a big crush on her).

This movie is so different. It's Candian for one, so it doesn't rely on the waves of destruction porn that American "end of the world" movie do. This movie is funny, this movie is moving. This movie says something about people.

The movie had a fairly low budget, so, like a twilight zone episode, the logistics and images of destruction are left to the viewer, while McKellar weaves the story with masterful dialogue and humor.

I've never seen anything quite like it, and you'll be glad you watched it I promise.
