Director Jon Favreau has created a stellar fantasy film encompassing a typical American family.
While the father (Tim Robbins) urgently has to go out for work, he leaves his two quarrelling sons and rebellious teen daughter alone at home. Six-year-old Danny (Jonah Bobo) and 10-year-old Walter (Josh Hutcherson) can, under no conditions make peace with each other. Bored, Danny goes down to the basement and discovers a board game called Zathura. He convinces Walter of its spectacular features, but to no heed. Danny begins to play, after which all hell breaks loose in the house. The living room is thronged by a meteor shower, instantly after a card is ejected from the game. Walter is wary of the game now, and decides to be a part it, to save them from an even bigger and uncanny disaster.
They continue taking turns to get to the end of the game, as that is the only way to escape this unforeseen tragedy.
The story maybe predictable but the journey to the end is the real essence of the film.
