David Drayton, his son and wife experience a severe thunderstorm, find shelter in their basement, only to awake in a semi-destroyed house. David and his son set out for the nearest shop to get some groceries and some items in order to fix their property.
In the meantime the town becomes engulfed in heavy mist and news of unnamable, ferocious creatures living in it spread quickly. Father and son end up finding refuge with some of their fellow citizens in a shop, but the true monsters don't lurk outside...

Writer and director Frank Darrabont achieves something remarkable: Instead of focussing on the apocalyptic atmosphere he creates a tense psychological thriller set in a horror-environment. Driven by their most primal instincts the group isolated in the shop do anything they deem necessary to stay alive. The viewer, already terrified by the strange creatures living in the mist, will be shocked by the people who are supposed to work together in order to stay alive. Maybe it is in times of despair, horror and hardship that human beings get the chance to prove who they really are. This is certainly the paradigm, in which the movie proves to be triumphant.

The acting, SFX, as well as the innovative design of the creatures are superb. It is rarely seen that movie-makers succeed in successfully letting their imagination run wild, without copying old costumes, camera-angles and twists.
The climax at the end is as horrifying as it could possibly get.

A highly recommendable Stephen King based horror-movie that certainly made its landmark in cinema history!

I went to see this film expecting something smart, I loved The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. But knowing it was about a mist sheltering eerie monsters within, I wasn't sure what exactly it would be. I find this to work in favor of your viewing pleasure.

We meet a young happy family at home watching a horrific storm, who decide to head down into the basement. The next morning they find their house in ruins.
While father and son attempt to stock up on some vital goods at the local grocery store, their small town is covered in a thick mist, preventing everyone from leaving the store.

At this point the film's main attraction begins, terror. At first the mist seems nothing more than an inconvenience. They soon find out however the mist harbors some seriously dangerous creatures. The locals find themselves imprisoned in the crowded store with nothing to do but work together to overcome their mutual problem.
However small conflicts emerge, intensifying the tensely forced relations between the citizens. The film turns into a psychological thriller.
With the conflicts heating up and the danger of the mist creatures becoming more and more imminent the film builds up a tension rarely seen in modern horror films. You will find yourself breathless at the tip of your seat, gasping to find out what unfolds.

And like previous Stephen King films, the ending will not disappoint.
