Serial killer Charles Lee Ray is brutally shot outside a toy store, but his voodoo mentor taught him how to transfer his soul into an object or person. He finds a Good Guy doll in the store and transfers himself into it, thus beoming Chucky, your "friend to the end!" In doll form.
