*SPOILERS*
This film is the proof that a silly story can be an excellent movie.
It is called "the most gory movie of all time". Deserves his name? Course!
Some websites say that it's a Z movie. Is this true? Yes it is.
The plot is really simple. A monkey-rat is captured on Skull Island. He was transferred to a zoo. In this same zoo we found the hero (Lionel), under the influence of his mother, who has his first date with a young lady. His mother spying her son is bitten by this strange animal cursed. She begins to turn into a strange creature. The trouble starts. Hell yeah!
Then the story accelerates. The secondary characters are hilarious (the priest who kicks ass, the mother covered with pus, the greedy uncle, the vet Nazi...). Humans become sort of zombies with sexual feelings and food need. Lionel keeps his creatures in his house using tranquilizer. In fact the real zoo is in his cellar! Peter Jackson takes the opportunity to make fun of the actual society. And if humans were more monstrous than the monsters? That's the developped idea! For exemple the fat uncle wants absolutely to steal Lionel's house, the mother of the hero is a murderer and the other boyfriend of Paquita is egocentric. The monsters are funnier and seem to enjoy catching these stupid humans! They have no problems like love, money or sadness. In fact this is the real life, isn't it?
Peter Jackson has excellent ideas. One monster stuck in the toilet and cut in two, a hybrid and vicious baby, a lawnmower very effective, an ear in the soup, the undead's lunch with the spoon on the brain... just to name a few! Sometimes we have the feeling to watch a comedy! This movie has never pretended to be clever. Each scene makes you laugh even if certain passages are overplayed (like the lovesick and very clumsy hero). We can think that the film is frightening with all these monsters, the blood, the horror, but not at all! Indeed, the director has exaggerated every scene. That's why pints of blood are spread everywhere, heads roll, hands are cut for our delight! Gore does not mean fear, but a bloody side, and some etymologies explain that by something gross. Even if the special effects are old, it doens't matter because it gives a tasty vintage look!
To sum up: gore & humor = Braindead. Don't wait, watch it dead or alive!
