An Iranian wife, and mother of four, Soraya, lives a humble life in a small village in Iran. Despite her loyalty to her husband, he demands a divorce so he can take another wife. Soraya refuses his request for the divorce. So, he, along with a couple conspirators, accuses her of adultery-a crime punishable by stoning.
The story is told by the village matriarch to a French journalist, in town due to car trouble, shortly after the stoning. Based on true events, this movie is as disturbing as they come. Even with a known outcome, it still shocks the viewer, especially the non-middle-eastern viewer, with the harsh reality a woman must endure in that part of the world.
The characters are believable-from the arrogance of the husband and the village “holy man”, to the sometimes-over-dramatic matriarch, to the children’s torn loyalty, to Soraya’s acceptance of the unjust, this film captures the saddening plight middle-eastern women have faced for centuries and are still forced to endure today.
