Ronin is a great action thriller directed by John Frankenheimer. Placed in southern France and Paris it shows a team of specialists which were hired to steal an important suitcase (in fact a ‘Macguffin’, it is never revealed what is inside the suitcase). The movie includes one of the best car chases ever made, because everything was shot with real cars and without any computer simulation. The setting in the French cities is very adequate as well as the cast, mainly Robert de Niro and Jean Reno.

I do really like the first half of the movie, where all the former intelligence operatives team up and try to assess each other, nobody trusts anyone. Everyone has another background, little hints show where they had their place in the past Cold War. The twist in the end is a bit surprising and far-fetched, but on the other hand it is a connection to real-world political events. In case you like Robert de Niro, espionage thrillers, car chases or the French landscape, I advise you to watch this movie.
