Hi @Dejamort! A few remarks about your review:
My first objection is about your use of the word « woke » in a derogatory way. For the record , the movement « Black life matters » was denounced as « woke » by the American extreme right movements and Donald Trump, which is enough for me to render them sympathetic. Prompting people to be « aware » of injustice should be regarded as positive (and yes this movement has radical militants, but what movement hasn't?). Just looking at official statistics, we can see, for instance, that for the same crime, black people are 4,2 times to be convicted than whites. Should we continue to ignore it ?
My second objection is about some contradictions. Indeed, it is paradoxical to underline that the story is based on real facts, and to call it a « fable » in the next sentence. Since you use « archetypal » to describe the characters, frankly what is the archetype of black people in 120 years of American cinema ? The intellectual ? The artist ? The good guy ? Or the thug, the underdog, the not-so-bright chap that dies in the end ? And for the ONE time where the cliché is reversed (based on true facts) you think it's too much and you call it edifying crap? What about one century of white male supremacy in cinema ? Isn't this brainwashing and edifying crap ?
I found the film quite interesting, though it's not the masterpiece of the century. Which leads me to my third objection : interpretation. I see nothing wrong with it. Finally, to come back to the current rumor ; « Hollywood is led by wokism » don't make me laugh ! The next time you see a blockbuster where the black male hero seduces and has sex with a white woman, come back to write about it. That will be the day !
No hard feeling though, it's just a matter of opinion. Cinematically yours!
