Peter is a failure as a writer and composer and decides to take his own life. In the midst of his attempt, he encounters two businessmen who are desperately short of money.

The orphaned sisters Annie, Karin, Grace, Irene and Maud return home to Denmark, where they make a living from their musical talents. After some time in Copenhagen, they decide to contact their only relative, an eccentric landowner.
