Justin McLeod is a former teacher living as a recluse. He is disfigured from a car crash and fire for which he was convicted. He is also a suspected pedophile. He is befriended by Chuck, igniting the town's suspicion and hostility. Justin instills in Chuck a love of justice and freedom from prejudice which sustains Chuck beyond the end of the film.
