1933. Depression and Prohibition. Calif, a stranger, walks into Spooner, Missouri . He works for Lute Wade to get some travelling money, but gets mixed in a bad situation: Lute's daughter is married to Sidney, a good-for-nothing drunk that beats his wife. Sidney and a local wacko preacher begin orchestrating a smear campaign against Calif.
