I think about abyss, death, cancer, the end of the world, how fleeting and temporary life is all the time. I was an atheist for nearly 5 years of my life. I totally relate to Woody Allen's neurotic, sad and obsessed characters, and so I did with his latest movie.
I just don't understand why Allen didn't cast himself as main character - he would be perfect. Larry David, the actor I absolutely have no knowledge of, is ok - but he plays the character as Allen would play it, maybe with a little more despair and bitterness which is annoying and too excessive. The only one who succeeded in imitating Allen was Jason Biggs in 'Anything Else' - perhaps the fact we have 2 characters like that there is the reason for which 'AE' is my all time-favourite Woody Allen's movie. Anyways, casting David and not himself was a bad move from Woody - the movie loses a lot of sympathy the audiance have for the main hero.
But the rest of the cast is superb - Evan Rachel Wood's performance has knocked me, almost, unconcious. She is a very good actress, but she was playing a lot of similiar characters in recent years. But this year she gave a terrific performance as The Queen in True Blood and now she is Melody Saint Anne Celestine, the character with, definetly, the most adorable name in all Woody Allen's movies and one of the most charming and amazing heroines of Allen's films. I had a feeling she would make a terrific Sookie Stackhouse, given that Wood is a huge TB fan I was wondering if she was trying to imitate Paquin's acting - why did it work? because Wood has a talent and charm. She was amazing to watch and kept my interest throughout the film.
Another great asset is Patricia Clarkson's presence. I love this actress - I'm currently watching 'Six Feet Under' and she is absolutely wonderful there, but here she shows how much talent she really has - she is hilarious and very natural in her role. Whenever her and Wood are on-screen the movie is really something that proves Allen still can cast actors and write briliantly. There was also one more thing keeping me watching - Henry Cavill, from 'The Tudors' - I could sit and watch him all day long.
The dialogues are hilarious, the observations are splendid, the jazz is playing in the background, the art is involved, the christianity is bashed and the sex is liberal. This is a typical, high quality Woody Allen's work.
