I wouldn't go as far as to call myself a fan of the series, but I definitely like the post apocalyptic vision in it and the entire concept of the movies. I read horrible reviews of T4 and in the end I went to the cinema only because of Bale and Helena Bonham Carter. And again I was surprised.
It's the early stages of the war between man and machines. And the savior John Conner (Christian Bale) is doing everything he can to make sure men survive. He learns that the machines have targeted the man who's suppose to father him, Kyle Reese, so he tries to find him. One of Conner's soldiers meets a man named Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) who has no knowledge of Judgment Day.
I very much enjoyed the movie – the whole atmosphere of post apocalyptic world – dry, unpleasant, hostile is there, the action is superb, the special effects look so real I was truly amazed and sound and sound mixing are Academy Award worthy - few times I experienced cinema shaking and ground moving beneath my feet, which was quite extreme. I also liked the music by Danny Elfman, especially at the beginning of the film, although it is far from being his best work. The way Alice in Chains's and Guns'n'Roses's songs were used was also quite clever and impressive, especially the latter one.
I don't recall seeing Sam Worthington in anything prior to seeing him in “Terminator – Salvation”. Of course now he is on his way to become a huge star, but a the time I was watching T4 he was unknown to me He literally appeared out of nowhere on Hollywood map – he has big part here, maybe even as big as Bale's part And he gave really good performance, but he wasn't better than my beloved Christian Bale. He is great at playing fearless, brave leader, who has been through a lot of pain and saw hell. I don't get the criticism he got from playing that part – he is more intense here than when he is Batman – when I saw him as John Connor I had no doubts that is the leader of the resistance.
It is always nice to see Helena Bonham Carter and she was deliciously evil in this one, Bryce Dallas Howard on the other hand was incredibly disappointing – she just stood there, doing nothing, but because of her subtle and interesting looks she made better Kate than Claire Danes did in “Terminator 3” . I loved the fact that unknown actors, such as Anton Yelchin and Moon Bloodgood had as much screen time as the big stars here.
The story is engaging, makes a lot of sense which is quite difficult whilst dealing with time travel - only two things really made me laugh - there seemed to be explosives conveniently placed everywhere - all they had to do was drop one bomb and entire freaking desert exploded, second thing was Connor reviving Marcus by punching him in the chest - I had a little LOST flashback right there.
All in all though, the movie is very good and I'm shocked it was directed by a person who polluted the world with two parts of “Charlie's Angels”. Don't believe the haters and the critics – this is a very good movie. Sure, it's not intellectual or groundbreaking in any way, but if you like post apocalyptic films or good science fiction movies you're gonna love this one.
